for everyone

Hee hee... was 'complaining' to Aik Kian, or rather, discussing about the Yes People in our department, one of the frequent occasions we talk about other people although I'm not allowed to gossip about others. Although this one is more about Yes People in general.

I was glancing at my watch and "Shit! It's 4 o'clock! I really thought it was 2pm!" I told Aik Kian. I worked through lunch today told Aik Kian that I was busy with the constant amendments one of my colleagues have been asking me to make. It was for a design for a stand for an exhibition a few of them will be participating in Atlanta, Georgia this coming November.

I was lamenting about how this colleague, although he agreed with my points totally, he just couldn't seem to be brave enough to convince the boss otherwise. He's really the type who'd say yes to the boss without offering his own opinions. So, I told him - we'll make it so ugly and then show and compare the two designs to the boss lor. Hell no!! I'm not one to compromise my designs in any way. No fuckin way! Hahahaha!!

My point to Aik Kian, though, was that these Yes People are usually the ones who'd do well come appraisal time. These are the people who would make bosses feel good about themselves, these are the people who know how not to offend people and stroke their egos. It doesn't matter if they are right. The bosses would know that sometimes they are wrong about certain things but they wouldn't want to acknowledge that because they are the bosses mah. If their subordinates are right all the time, might as well they become the boss right?

That's human nature for you. Everybody wants to hear what they WANT to hear, especially if you are supposed to command respect and are supposed to be more knowledgable. But I think that's where they have gone wrong. Knowledge acquisition and learning in general is a life-long process and NOBODY is right all the time. Even if you are all powerful and influential - there are lots of things you can learn from others definitely.

Sigh, maybe me and Aik Kian should learn to have a bit of skill from these Yes People. Bosses do remember the good things you have said about them, rarely the things you have done that have significant value as a whole.

C'est la vie.
