I wasn't exactly looking forward to watching this movie because I had really low expectations of the movie but I had to disappoint the guys by watching it with T instead of them, the unofficial Dead or Alive gaming clan codenamed 'YAP'. I'll tell you the story of how that came about another time.
Anyways, when T said "Let's go for a movie!" I was in one of my mean moods and so gave her the list of movie suggestions - Death Note, The Departed, Sinking of Japan, The Grudge 2 and Dead or Alive. I know she likes those intellectually stimulating and arty farty movies they show at The Cathay and DOA was the last movie I expected her to choose. So, when she said "DOA! I wanna see Devon Aoki!" I said "HUH?!!!"
To tell you frankly, when the movie reached its 15th minute - I have given up all hope to see a good storyline and credible acting but I was actually enjoying the eye candy. I was giggling with delight after the now famous slipping into her bra fight scene by the charcater Christie, who is supposed to be an assassin and a thief.
Next came Tina Armstrong on a yacht, being threatened by 5 loony goons who look more comical that intimidating. I couldnt believe they casted the actor who played Liu Kang in the movie Mortal Kombat where he was the main heroic character, to be the head pirate who seemed to be unable to fight (or act, for that matter) to save his life.
I definitely will not feature a movie spoiler here and reveal all the details about the movie but I just have to tell you one thing -
If you really MUST see this movie for one reason or another, make sure you don't expect much or even see your favorinte characters in DOA come to life with their signature moves and fighting yells you get in the game.
But for the guys, there is really lots of eye candy for you.
Hee hee hee....
=P
**** Something in my mind bugged and then chided me for writing such a short review but I didn't want to say much because I've only got bad things to say about the movie. Ok lah, there were some elements that I found pleasing after some time.
The character Zack provided quite a comic relief for trying to seduce Tina Armstrong to no avail. He ended up looking wimpy though after losing a fight with her. Got his ass kicked quite bad. Never knew the actress who played one of the main roles in 'My Name Is Earl' could be quite strong and agile. Can't remember her name though. Too lazy to find out too. Hahahaha!
I also thought they casted quite well the character of Bass although he looked more muscular than fat. I thougt the actor carried off the look quite ok.
For ardent fans of the game though, I think you will be disappointed that some of your favourite characters were kept subtle to make the girls more prominent, such as Jann Lee (doesn't look like the character at all, looked quite pathetic), Lei Fang (looked really ugly and screen time was less than a minute) and Gen Fu (our favourite Ah Pek) who appeared skinny rather than stocky. His costumes were quite accurate though.
I wouldn't even want to mention the 'bad guy' who is played by Julia Roberts' older brother. Seems like Julia's destined to act in Oscar winning movies, and her brother's destined to 'act' in crappy B-grade movies.
Ok, now I feel more satisfied now that I've written more.
Hahahah!!!
